Another award! COD is the winner of the 2009 Heritage and History Award!

Breakwater Books is pleased to announce that Cod: The Ecological History of the North Atlantic Fisheries has been awarded the Writers Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador 2009 Heritage and History Award.

The Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Heritage and History Book Award comes with a $250 prize and is awarded to a work of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or children’s/young adult literature that exemplifies excellence in the interpretation of the history and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador. The award is sponsored by the Historic Sites Association as a way to demonstrate appreciation for those writers whose exploration of their culture and heritage has shaped their writing.

The devastation of many of the greatest North Atlantic cod stocks, particularly those of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Grand Banks, has become an icon for the unsustainable relation between human exploitation and nature. In Cod, George Rose tells the full story of that devastation, in scientific detail, for the first time – from the formation of the North Atlantic marine ecosystems to the massive stock declines in the last half of the 20th century.
